Moving from one house to another can spark a range of emotions. On the one hand the anticipation of new beginnings can be very exciting and, on the other, the practicalities of packing household possessions can be quite nerve-wracking.
When preparing to pack, often the first thought is to round up as many pre-used cardboard boxes as possible - usually sourced from family and friends. But typically, the boxes will come in different sizes which does not make for efficient stacking.
Alternatively, you might prefer to purchase brand new, uniform size cardboard boxes and assemble them yourself using tape. And then once the boxes are unpacked at the new place, the question arises - do you have a simple disposal or storage plan for this ‘mountain’ of boxes?
We spoke with Jill Wong-Stratford, Director of Cleverbox, to find out what her philosophy was behind her business and what drove the idea to develop and supply reusable plastic packing boxes.
Jill says, “I was on the lookout for a business idea that would provide a more efficient and convenient solution for people when moving from one place to another. I wanted to help as many people as possible switch to a smarter, more sustainable way of moving.”
Cleverbox makes a bold stand for its philosophy around packaging – reusing rather than recycling.
“Through my experience working in the property field, I realised that in Auckland people tend to move more often, and each move can create a high quota of waste once the unpacking is done.
I figured instead of discarding thousands of cardboard boxes there had to be a better way - a more sustainable solution.”
Originally Jill launched the business as Leafbox Auckland, but eventually rebranded it to Cleverbox. And, in this time, it has evolved into a business offering that not only provides a sustainable solution, but also offers far greater convenience, saving customers time and money.
Jill says, “With the rebrands we wanted to take an evolutionary approach as essentially the brand values have not changed and the core service remains the same. But we wanted a name that was catchy and fun and more engaging for our customers; we feel Cleverbox does that. It better reflects our values around the product which makes it easier to connect with our customers and explain our product and our message that it is clever to re-use.
“We were approached by Ray White Damerell Group to partner with them as part of its Client Care Programme.”
Jill says, “When Ray White Damerell Group invited us to partner with them as part of its Client Care Programme, we jumped at the opportunity. We could see our sustainability focussed service would hugely benefit Ray White Damerell Group’s clients - vendors, purchasers, landlords and tenants.
“With dry cardboard boxes there is a chance you can use them up to two, maybe three times which is why many people believe recycling is the way to go. However, a product that can be used over and over hundreds of times is always preferable to short-use recycling. It takes a large amount of resources and money to regularly recycle.”
Cleverbox plastic packing boxes can be used hundreds of times over. Long-term this means less landfill, energy and water is used in the recycling process.
The long-lasting plastic Cleverbox packing boxes are made of HDPE plastic which, once its useable life is over the plastic can easily be recycled into other products. They come assembled with handles to make lifting easier, are very sturdy, waterproof and crushproof and the sealable lid does not require taping. A moving dolly is supplied which means you don’t need to carry heavy boxes any distance. An eco-friendly cleaning agent is used to sanitise the boxes after each use.

Jill has some good tips for packing up a home. Whether you need to declutter, hold a garage sale or give your old items to charity, she recommends you start to pack as early as possible. It is best to start with rooms you use the least and it is a good idea to pack one room at a time.
It helps to pack a box of essentials – labelling it ‘moving day kit’. It should contain your toiletries, important medicines, a change of clothes, phone charger and some snacks to keep your energy up. This box should be easily accessible in the new home so that if you need something urgently you won’t need to scramble around the rest of the boxes looking for your essentials. It is important to clearly label all boxes.
